A RARE PERFORMANCE BY MILES' 1973 SEPTET IN SWEDEN
This concert was recorded in 1973 with a very similar line-up to the later releases Dark Magus, Agharta, and Pangaea, featuring Al Foster on drums, Michael Henderson on bass, Mtume on percussion, Dave Liebman on sax, and most importantly Reggie Lucas and Pete Cosey on guitar. It contains some material from the previously listed albums, and much that is not, at least in any recognizable form. This band blended jazz and rock in a way that has never been repeated. Miles' septet toured Europe from October 24 to November 21, 1973, as part of the 'Newport Jazz Festival in Europe" presented by George Wein. This concert took place in Stockholm, Sweden on October 27, at the beginning of the tour. Although the tracks have been divided on this release according to the directions of most discographers, it must be said that this group used to combine the tunes in a very free manner, often playing the melodies in midperformance, or just quoting them briefly. In certain instances, when one of the horns is improvising on a tune, the rhythm section is already playing the next, creating a subtle transition which cannot be reproduced when dividing tracks digitally.
Note: this footage comes from rare vintage TV broadcasts and the image quality is not up to today's standards. It is presented here for the exceptional quality of the music and historical importance.
