Editor's Info:
Andrey Zvyagintsev's directorial feature film debut "The Return" overwhelmed international critics, with the New York Times declaring that it "renews the grand tradition of Russian cinematic mysticism epitomized by Andrei Tarkovsky".

Mythical, metaphysical, ambiguous, open to all manner of interpretation, and with a plurality of possible meanings resonating behind its storyline - is it a political allegory? A religious metaphor? Or 'just' a suspenseful psychological thriller? - and starkly filmed by Mikhail Kritchman, the movie also gains much from the dramatic, eerie music of Andrey Dergatchev which combines and contrasts electronic sounds and writing for voices and for piano with nakedly direct folk song and environmental noises - wind, rain, fire, the sound of oars dragged through water - as well as snatches of dialogue..

The Music

As The Hollywood Reporter noted "Andrey Dergatchev's music punctuates the proceedings with understated nerve-impulse precision." Almost every review of The Return has pointed to the way in which the music-and-sound score underpins the action.

Dergatchev's soundtrack is music that suggests some new category: organic-industrial-rural dreamscapes, compellingly evocative with or without knowledge of the film.

It is music that can appeal readily to followers of ambient music, Godard soundtracks, world music (the folk song element), or even Arvo Pärt (who also wrote extensively for film early in his career).

Andrey Dergatchev was born in 1969 in Astrakhan, Russia, and has worked variously as a dancer, light and sound designer, musician and actor as well as composer of music for film, video and ballet. From 1996 he worked at the Theremin Centre of the Moscow Conservatory and has participated in international symposiums devoted to music and new technology including the Concours International Musique Electroacoustique de Bourges in 1997 and 2001. Dergatchev co-founded the Saira Blanch Theatre group in 1991, which has toured widely and collaborates periodically with Austrian interdisciplinary group Lux Flux.
