Editor's info:
Far Cry was Eric Dolphy's third album as a leader, following Outward Bound and Out There (all three LPs were recorded in 1960). These albums announced the beginning of a prolific career, which would tragically end four years later with Dolphy's death. Dolphy died on June 29, 1964, in a diabetic coma (just nine days after turning 36-years old), leaving a short but tremendous legacy in the jazz world. Trumpeter Booker Little passed away at an even younger age. Dolphy's partner in Far Cry. Little was born in Memphis, Tennessee on April 2, 1938. The trumpeter suffered from uremia, apparently as a consequence of Lupus, and died of kidney failure on October 5, 1961, at the age of 23. Far Cry was Dolphy and Little's first recorded collaboration ever. Before the trumpeter's untimely death, they would participate together on five more albums: Abbey Lincoln's Straight Ahead, Booker Little's own Out Front, John Coltrane's Africa Brass, Eric Dolphy's At the Five Spot and Max Roach's Percussion Bittersweet (all of them recorded in 1961).

The complete original album Far Cry (Prestige/New Jazz 8270), featuring Eric Dolphy in a quintet format with another star who passed away before his time, trumpeter Booker Little. Among the many highlights are an outstanding version of the Billie Holiday-Mal Waldron ballad "Left Alone" and Dolphy's unaccompanied alto sax reading of "Tenderly". As a bonus, two tunes originally issued under the name the Jazz Artists Guild, both of which were recorded on the same date on November 1, 1960, and each featuring one of the stars of Far Cry: Dolphy on "T'Ain't Nobody's Business if I Do", and Little on "Cliff Walk".
Includes 16-page booklet

All Music Guide: Far Cry
"Charlie Parker's influence permeates this 1960 session. Beyond the obvious acknowledgment on song titles, his restless spirit is utilized as a guiding light for breaking bebop molds. Far Cry finds multi-reedist Eric Dolphy in a transitional phase, relinquishing Parker's governing universal impact and diving into the next controversial phase that critics began calling 'anti-jazz'. On this date Booker Little's lyrical trumpet and Jackie Byard's confident grasp of multiple piano styles (though both steeped in hard bop) were sympathetic to the burgeoning 'avant-garde' approach that Dolphy displays, albeit sparingly, on this session. Far Cry contains the initial performance of Dolphy's future jazz classic 'Miss Ann', along with his first recorded solo alto sax performance on 'Tenderly', in which Dolphy bridges the gap between the solo saxophone performances of Coleman Hawkins and Anthony Braxton." (Al Campbell)

Penguin Guide of Jazz: Far Cry
"The week before Christmas 1960 was a quite astonishing one in Dolphy's career. On Tuesday, 20 December, he took part in Gunther Schuller's Jazz Abstractions, taping two Third Stream pieces in the company of Ornette Coleman, Scott LaFaro, Bill Evans and Jim Hall. The following day he played in Ornette's ambitious double quartet, the sessions that were to yield one of the definitive statements of the jazz avant-garde, Free Jazz. The very same day, he went over the river to Hackensack, New Jersey, and recorded Far Cry, his one studio recording with Booker Little." (Richard Cook & Brian Morton)
